SAGE – A Historical Perspective
Permission was granted to Charmaine price by the dr/NABSE Board in 1995, under the leadership of President Nell Lewis to form a retiree group from persons who had been honored by the organization in previous years. A small planning committee decided that this group would best serve Dallas/Regional NABSE (dr/NABSE) by supporting their ongoing projects.
Dr. Loise Harrison-Jones, former national president, suggested the name SAGE which is defined as a person recognized for judgement and wisdom. This acronym represents the organization’s main purpose – Seniors Actively Guiding Education. Former CO-Chairs June Birdsong, Elsa Embry, ( both now deceased) with Charmaine Price, guided the organization during the early years.
The first support activity was to assist various committees within the 1995 NABSE National Conference held in Dallas. In addition, Members presented a panel entitled “Avenues for Change: Effectively Involving Retired Educators.” Other assistance with dr/NABSE projects have been the annual Instructional Fairs, the Scholarship and Honorary Members Reception, the Archives and History Program, and the 2004 National Conference.
